Grand Seiko 61GS
The 61GS makes its ambition tangible. At the beginning are broad shoulders, upright lug ends and a 36,000-beat automatic movement: a substantial, sharply resolved interpretation of Seiko Style. The quiet early dials are among my favourites precisely because they leave so much of that achievement unannounced.
The family then opens in several directions. Crosshair dials give the markers real sculptural weight; cut crystals introduce another layer of geometry. The Special refines the movement further, while the VFA combines exceptional adjustment with some of the most extraordinary forms in the entire vintage Grand Seiko range. The mechanical hierarchy is useful context, but it does not predict which watch will hold my attention.
Living with these watches has deepened my appreciation of their movements, their winding action and their capacity for precise, dependable service. Looking at them together reveals something equally compelling: a familiar case fold or dial arrangement can accommodate radically different characters. The pleasure lies in following those changes all the way down to the smallest decision.
