Grand Seiko 61GS Special 6156-8000

A narrow frame
The 6156-8000 brings a particularly clear balance to the Special family. The bezel is remarkably thin, leaving the dial open, while the substantial flat crystal gives that openness a definite height. Its character comes from the tension between those two decisions.
My March 1971 example sits on the XAB-271 bracelet. Its sequence of polished and textured surfaces extends the precision of the case around the wrist. There is plenty of life in the metal, while the broad, unbroken plane of the crystal keeps the face composed.

Sibling rivalry
I put this watch beside my June 1971 6156-8010, both on XAB-271 bracelets. The 8000 pairs its narrow bezel with a thick, flat crystal; the 8010 answers with a broader bezel and cut glass. The shared movement and bracelet make the difference particularly easy to read. Same bloodline, a different balance.
