Grand Seiko 45GS
The 45GS is where Daini’s established Seiko identity acquires a new intensity. The family arrived in 1968 with a hand-wound movement running at 36,000 vibrations an hour. In the compact 4520-8000, the taut case and assertive dial seem entirely at home with that restless mechanical rhythm.
Yet the same movement supports very different ideas. The batwing spreads its folds across the wrist; the 7010 makes a remarkable amount of expression out of a few fine lines; the solid-gold 8010 gives precision a textured surface. I enjoy the breadth of that experiment as much as its most familiar result.
Living with these watches has made their engineering as compelling to me as their appearance. Serviced examples have given me extraordinary stability, while a broken mainspring in the gold batwing was a reminder of the demands behind that performance. My affection for the 45 includes both the exhilaration and the care it asks for.
