King Seiko First J14102E

Why it matters
The starting proposition of this story: a flat dial, straight hands and disciplined planes, while the case and its projecting lugs still read as distinct forms.
What I look at
The flatness is coordinated across the dial, hands, crystal and polished lug surfaces. The folded indices retain a more ornamental character.
The relieved underside and the chamfers at the caseback make the upright flank feel lighter than a simple cylindrical wall would.
The gold-filled reference changes from J14102E to J14102 in October 1962, alongside the reduction from 100 to 80 microns of gold. The steel version retains J14102E through August 1963.
